Scrovegni Chapel

interno cappella.jpg

This small chapel, with its simple, clean, external lines, is composed of a single hall inside, ending with a presbytery containing the sarcophagus of Enrico Scrovegni, by Andriolo de Santi. On the altar is a Madonna and Child with Two Angels, by the 14th-century sculptor Giovanni Pisano. It was probably in 1303, having seen Giotto and his disciples working in St. Anthony's Basilica, that Scrovegni commissioned Giotto to decorate the walls of his own chapel (1303-05). The entire cycle of frescoes is considered one of the greatest artistic masterpieces of all time. Giotto illustrated some of the most evocative episodes in the New Testament in thirty-nine painted scenes, depicting events in the lives of Mary's parents, Joachim and Anne, and others in the lives of the Virgin Mary and Jesus. He also painted fourteen monochrome figures on two walls below the frescoes, allegories of the Vices and Virtues. The frescoes themselves end on the inner wall of the faįade with the great Universal Judgement, as narrated in the Apocalypse.
